Hale Reservation Traded Its Parking Fee for Something Permanent

Hale Reservation Traded Its Parking Fee for Something Permanent

For years, pulling into Hale Reservation's main entrance on Carby Street meant slowing at a small booth, rolling down the window, and handing over ten dollars before you ever reached a trailhead. That transaction is gone. As of January 1, 2026, parking in the lots off Hale's Main Entrance is free, year-round, for anyone who wants the trails, the ponds, or the fields inside the largest piece of protected land in Westwood.

Hale's own visitor page doesn't frame this as a marketing gesture. It ties the free parking directly to the reservation's conservation work, presenting the fee's disappearance as a result of that effort rather than a separate perk. That distinction matters, because it means the parking change and a much bigger announcement land in the same calendar year for the same reason.

The Campaign That Made the Fee Disappear

On September 24, Hale is holding its annual Fall Equinox Celebration, and this year the event carries more weight than usual. It marks the completion of the Campaign for Kids, Conservation, and Community, Hale's multi-year fundraising push, and the permanent protection of Hale's land that comes with it.

For a working sense of what "permanent protection" means in practice, look at Sen Ki. It's a 30-acre parcel of Hale's property sitting between High Street and Hartford Street, open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk, and it's currently the only section of the reservation covered by a conservation restriction held by Westwood Land Trust. That legal instrument is what keeps a piece of land from ever becoming anything other than what it already is, regardless of who owns it or what pressures the surrounding town faces. The campaign completing this fall is what extends that same kind of protection across the rest of the property.

Hale itself stretches across the Westwood and Dover line, which means the reservation functions as a shared backyard for two adjoining towns rather than a single-town amenity. A conservation restriction covering the whole property protects that shared use, not just the acreage inside one municipal boundary.

What Free Actually Covers, and What Still Costs Money

The free parking applies specifically to the lots reached through Hale's Main Entrance at 80 Carby Street. From there, several destinations open up without a fee attached:

  • The Andrew Cucchiara Learning Center, reached by continuing past the Main Office and up the hill to its gravel lot
  • Cat Rock Parking Lot, the first paved lot on the left past the Main Office
  • North Beach, accessed on foot from the Cat Rock lot via the dirt road past the bulletin board
  • Powissett Lodge, about a mile and a half in from the Main Office
  • The Trading Post and Simches Family Center, about a mile in

The South Entrance, on Bruné Way opposite 576 Dover Road, is a different arrangement. Access there is limited to South Beach Day Pass holders, Family and Community Program participants, special events, and private rentals. A South Beach Day Pass runs fifteen dollars per person per day, capped at fifty dollars per vehicle, and drops to five dollars per person after 5 p.m. Children under two get in free. That fee structure hasn't changed. The reservation drew a clear line between the trail network it wants used constantly and casually, and the swimming beach it still manages as a ticketed program.

The Fall Calendar Worth Building Weekends Around

With the parking friction gone at the entrance most residents actually use, the fall calendar becomes easier to treat as a running list rather than a once-a-season outing.

Date Event What it actually is
Sept. 24 Fall Equinox Celebration Marks the completed conservation campaign and permanent land protection
Oct. 19 Fall Mountain Biking Clinics & Great Pumpkin Smash MTB Race Skills clinics that build toward a race for riders who complete them
Oct. 25 Hale-o-ween Crafts, hiking, and a haunted cabin geared to ages 4 to 10, plus a new, spookier track added this year for older kids later in the day
Nov. 28 10th Annual Fall Family Scavenger Hunt Acorn toss, leaf rubbing, and an animal yoga pose challenge for the whole family

None of these require advance payment at the gate the way a visit here once did. That's a small operational detail, but it changes the math a family runs before deciding whether a Tuesday afternoon walk is worth the trip.

Why This Changes a Saturday, Not Just a Balance Sheet

The old fee wasn't large enough to keep anyone out of Hale who really wanted to go. What it did was turn every visit into a small decision. Ten dollars to park for a twenty-minute walk with the dog reads differently than ten dollars to park for a full afternoon at North Beach, and that math quietly pushed casual, frequent use toward occasional, planned use.

Removing the fee at the entrance most residents use most often shifts Hale closer to how a town park functions, somewhere you go because you're passing by, not because you scheduled it. Pairing that with a legal guarantee that the land underneath those trails isn't going anywhere gives Westwood something it didn't quite have before: a 1,200-acre reservation that behaves like a public commons, funded and protected well enough that using it on a random Wednesday doesn't require a plan.

That's worth walking into this fall, whether it's for the equinox celebration on the 24th, a lap on the mountain bike course before the Great Pumpkin Smash, or just a free parking spot at Cat Rock on an ordinary afternoon.
